The Religious Need the Gospel

The Religious Need the Gospel

God's standard is absolute perfection, and knowing His law only increases our accountability - religious rituals and outward actions can't save us because God looks at the heart, which we're powerless to change on our own. The good news is that Jesus perfectly kept the law on our behalf, His righteousness has been credited to us, and the Holy Spirit is actively transforming our hearts from the inside out.

Read Romans 2:12-3:8

  1. Paul says the Jews had an advantage in knowing God's law, but this also increased their accountability. In what ways do we have similar advantages today?

  2. Over time, trying to follow Jesus, we realize our sin is deeper than we first imagined, and God's standards are higher than we ever knew. Have you experienced this? How have you responded - by hiding, performing, or something else?

  3. What are the outward religious actions you're tempted to rely on for your standing with God (baptism, church attendance, service, etc.)? How is "heart righteousness" different?
