Acts 1:1-11

The introduction to the book of Acts (Acts 1.1-14) sets the stage for all that is to come. It is a bit of a summary of Luke’s first volume (the Gospel of Luke), especially Luke 24.44-49, and it emphasizes 3 key things. First, that Acts begins in the middle of the Story - God’s rescue mission story told throughout the bible, culminating in the work and teaching of Jesus, and now incorporating all disciples of Jesus. Second, that the church is commissioned to carry on the work of Jesus, witnessing to his death and resurrection, and taking the good news to the ends of the earth. Third, that Jesus has made generous provision for the church in her mission by promising to send the Holy Spirit to empower and send her to be witnesses.
